How to Track Ovulation: The Six Days That Matter

You have about six days in each cycle when sex can lead to pregnancy. Five of them come before you ovulate, and the sixth is the day itself. The part that catches people out is which end of that week they are standing at.

Why six days, and not the whole month
The window is six days long because of how long two cells survive. An egg lives for about 12 to 24 hours after it is released. Sperm can survive in the body for up to five days. Add those together and you get the six days when sperm and egg can still meet, according to ACOG.
That arithmetic has an odd consequence. Five of the six days happen before there is an egg at all. Sperm arrive first and wait. Only the last day of the window is the day the egg is actually there.
This was measured directly rather than assumed. In a 1995 study in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers followed 221 women through 625 cycles, testing daily urine samples to pin down when each woman ovulated. Every single pregnancy came from sex during a six-day stretch that ended on the day of ovulation. Not one came from sex afterwards.
The odds rise across the window and peak on the last day of it, which is the day you ovulate.

So the window does not open when you notice something. It opens five days before an event you cannot see, and it shuts on the day that event happens. Everything else in this guide is a way of working out when that day will be, early enough to be useful.

Why day 14 is wrong for most people
The advice to expect ovulation on day 14 comes from a 28-day cycle, and most cycles are not 28 days. Anything from 24 to 38 days counts as normal, according to the NIH's reference text on the menstrual cycle.
Here is the part that makes prediction possible. A cycle has two halves, and they behave completely differently.
One half of your cycle stretches and shrinks; the other stays put. That is the whole basis of counting backwards.

Because the second half holds steady, ovulation sits roughly 14 days before your next period, not 14 days after your last one. On a 28-day cycle those two happen to land on the same date, which is why the day 14 rule survives. On any other cycle length they do not.

Four days is not a rounding error when the target is six days wide. Someone following the day 14 rule on a 32-day cycle would be trying in the week before their window opens, and would be finished by the time it did.
Step 1: Log three cycles before you predict anything
Write down the first day of full bleeding every month. That date is day 1. Spotting the day before does not count; wait for proper flow.
Count from one day 1 to the next day 1. That number is your cycle length. Do it for three cycles before you rely on any prediction, because a single cycle tells you nothing about how much yours moves around.
Then note two figures: your shortest cycle and your longest. If the gap between them is three days or less, counting will work well for you. If it is wider than about seven days, treat every prediction as a rough guide and lean harder on the tests in Step 3.

Step 2: Count back from your next period
Take your typical cycle length and subtract 14. That gives the day of your cycle when you probably ovulate. Then count five days back from there to find where the window opens.
- Find your usual cycle length from Step 1. Use your shortest recent cycle if they vary, so you open the window early rather than late.
- Subtract 14. A 30-day cycle gives day 16. A 26-day cycle gives day 12.
- Subtract another 5 to find the first fertile day. Day 16 becomes day 11.
- Mark the whole stretch, from that first day through your estimated ovulation day. That is your six-day window.
A full worked example
Someone whose cycles run 29 to 31 days, using the shortest:

Treat the result as a window to aim at, not a date to hit. Counting gets you to roughly the right week. The next two steps narrow it down.
Step 3: Start ovulation tests before you expect to need them
An ovulation test looks for luteinising hormone, or LH. Levels of it climb sharply shortly before an egg is released, and the test turns positive when it crosses a threshold. That climb is called the LH surge.
Ovulation follows the start of the surge by about 36 to 44 hours. That is the number this whole guide turns on, so it is worth sitting with. A positive test tells you an egg is coming in roughly a day and a half.
Watch out
Work it through and the problem appears. If the window is six days and it shuts on ovulation day, then a positive test leaves under two days of it. Four days have already gone. A positive test is a closing bell, not an opening one.
So start testing three or four days before the ovulation day you calculated in Step 2, not on it. On the worked example above, that means beginning around day 11 or 12 rather than day 15.
- Test at the same time each afternoon. LH often shows up in urine later in the day, so first morning urine can miss the start of a surge.
- Do not drink heavily in the two hours before testing. Diluted urine can read negative when the hormone is there.
- Read it at the time written on the packet. A line that appears an hour later does not count.
- A test is positive only when the second line is as dark as the control line, or darker. A faint line is not a positive, and this is the single most common misreading.
What these tests cannot do is confirm that an egg was actually released. They detect a hormone that usually precedes ovulation. Usually is not always: a surge can happen without an egg following it. That gap is what Step 4 closes.
Step 4: Use temperature to check your work
Basal body temperature is your temperature at complete rest, before you get out of bed. After ovulation it rises slightly and stays up until your next period. The rise is small, which is why it needs a proper basal thermometer rather than a regular one.
The rise happens after the egg is released, so temperature can never tell you what is about to happen. It tells you what already did. For planning a window it is useless, and for checking whether your window was in the right place it is excellent.
- Take it first thing, before sitting up, drinking, or speaking, at roughly the same time daily.
- Record every reading, including odd ones. A poor night's sleep, illness or alcohol can lift a single day's number.
- Look for a sustained rise, not one high morning. Three consecutive higher readings is the usual confirmation.
- Compare it with your prediction at the end of the cycle. If the rise keeps landing later than the day you calculated, move your estimate.
After a few cycles this is what turns a guess into a pattern you can trust. You are not tracking temperature to catch this month. You are tracking it to be right next month.
Step 5: Put the four signals together
No single method does the whole job. Counting is early but rough. Tests are precise but late. Temperature is certain but backwards. Used together they cover each other's weaknesses.

A cycle run properly looks like this: count back to find days 10 to 15, start testing on day 11, get a positive on day 14, and see temperature rise on day 16. Four signals agreeing means next month's prediction can be sharper.
On frequency, the evidence is reassuringly relaxed. ACOG's guidance is sex every day or every other day across the fertile window. There is no need to save anything up, and no benefit in timing a single attempt perfectly.
When tracking does not work
Counting assumes a cycle steady enough to predict. Plenty of cycles are not, and that is worth knowing early rather than after six frustrating months.
Cycles that swing widely
If your cycles vary by more than about a week, the subtract-14 method will keep missing. The window still exists; it simply moves. Ovulation tests started early, plus temperature to confirm, will do more for you than any calendar.
PCOS and ovulation tests
Ovulation tests were designed for regular cycles with one clear mid-cycle surge, and polycystic ovary syndrome often does not produce that. LH can sit high for long stretches, which makes tests read positive repeatedly without an egg being released. If you have PCOS, or if you get several positives in one cycle, talk to a doctor rather than buying more tests.
Cycles with no temperature rise
If you chart carefully for several cycles and never see a sustained rise, that is information worth acting on. It can mean ovulation is not happening in those cycles, which is a common and often treatable cause of difficulty conceiving.
Watch out
See a doctor after 12 months of regular unprotected sex without pregnancy — or after 6 months if you are 35 or older, and sooner still if you are over 40 or have a known condition affecting fertility. These are ACOG's thresholds, and bringing your cycle records to that first appointment will save time.
Common mistakes
Waiting for a positive test to start trying. It is the most natural reading of what the test is for, and it costs four of the six days. The test confirms your timing was right; it is not the starting gun. Start in the days before it.
Counting 14 days forward from the first day of your period. This is right only on a 28-day cycle and wrong on every other. Count backwards from the next period instead.
Treating a faint second line as a positive. LH is present in small amounts all cycle, so a faint line is normal and means nothing. Only a line matching or beating the control line counts.
Using temperature to plan. The rise comes after the event, so a chart can only ever tell you the window has closed. It is a check on your method, not a forecast.
Predicting from one cycle. A single cycle length could be your shortest, your longest, or an outlier caused by illness or travel. Three cycles is the minimum before the number means anything.
Testing with very dilute urine. Drinking a lot before an afternoon test can hide a real surge, and a missed surge sends you into the next cycle believing you did not ovulate.
