How this is counted
Today is not counted, Christmas Day is. So on Christmas Eve the answer is one day, not two. That is what people mean by “days until”, and it is the commonest reason two countdowns disagree by exactly one.
Weeks are split, not rounded. 358 days is 51 weeks and 1 day. Some sites round that down to 51 and others up, without saying which — so both numbers are shown here instead.
Sleeps are nights. The same figure as days: you sleep tonight and wake one day closer.
Working days exclude weekends and US federal holidays, so Thanksgiving and Christmas Day itself come out.
The clock runs to midnight at the start of Christmas Day, in your own time zone — which is why a countdown pinned to one city shows a different number from this one.

How a countdown to Christmas is counted
Christmas Day is 25 December every year, so the countdown has only one moving part: today. Everything else is arithmetic.
The count runs from tomorrow to Christmas Day inclusive. Today is not counted, Christmas is. On Christmas Eve that makes the answer one day rather than two, which is what people mean when they ask.
That single choice is why two countdowns often differ by exactly one. Neither is broken; they are counting differently and not saying so.
What to enter

- Whole days from tomorrow to 25 December. The headline figure, and the one every other unit is derived from.
- Weeks
- The day count split into completed weeks plus the days left over, shown as '51w 1d' rather than a decimal. A decimal week is not a unit anyone thinks in.
- Sleeps
- Nights between now and Christmas, which is the same number as days — you sleep tonight and wake one day closer.
- Months
- Whole calendar months, then the remaining days. Counted a month at a time rather than dividing by 30, so February does not distort it.
- Working days
- Weekdays with US federal holidays removed, so Thanksgiving and Christmas Day itself come out of the total.

The clock runs to midnight at the start of 25 December, in your own time zone. A countdown fixed to one city will show a different number everywhere else.
Working days use US federal holidays. Other countries, and individual states, have their own.
After 25 December the count rolls to the following year. On Christmas Day itself it says so rather than jumping to 364.
How to work out the days until Christmas yourself
You do not need a tool for this, and doing it once makes the disagreements between countdowns obvious.
Count the whole months first. From today's date to the 25th of each following month. From 25 September to 25 December is exactly three months, with nothing left over.
Add the days in those months. Months are 30 or 31 days apart from February, so add them individually rather than multiplying. September to December is 30 + 31 + 30 = 91 days.
Decide whether today counts. It should not. Counting from tomorrow to Christmas Day inclusive is what the question means, and it is where most one-day discrepancies come from.
Divide by seven for weeks. Keep the remainder rather than the decimal. 91 days is 13 weeks exactly; 358 days is 51 weeks and 1 day.

Counting today as well would give 359, which is the other convention.

Rounded rather than split, that is 51 weeks — and a site that rounds up would say 51.1.

- How many days until Christmas?
The countdown above answers it live, from today. It counts from tomorrow to 25 December inclusive, so on Christmas Eve it reads one day rather than two.
Christmas is always 25 December, so the only thing that changes the answer is the date you ask on — and whether today is counted.
- How many weeks until Christmas?
Divide the days remaining by seven and keep the remainder. From 1 January 2026 it is 358 days, which is 51 weeks and 1 day.
This is where countdowns disagree most visibly: one site floors 51.14 to 51, another rounds to 51, a third prints the decimal. All three are the same number presented differently.
- How many sleeps until Christmas?
The same number as days. You sleep tonight and wake one day closer, so on the evening of 23 December there are two sleeps left and on the morning of the 24th there is one.
It is the day count phrased the way a child asks it, which is why it is shown separately even though the arithmetic is identical.
- How many months until Christmas?
Counted as whole calendar months plus the days left over — from 25 September that is exactly three months, from 26 September it is two months and 29 days.
Dividing days by 30 gives a different and slightly wrong answer, because only four months have 30 days.
- Does the countdown change with my time zone?
Yes, and it should. Christmas begins at midnight where you are, so the final hours differ by up to a full day between Auckland and Hawaii.
A countdown fixed to one city is accurate for that city only. This one uses your device's clock.
- How many working days until Christmas?
Weekdays remaining with US federal holidays taken out, which removes Thanksgiving and Christmas Day itself from the total.
It is the figure that matters for shipping cut-offs and work deadlines, and it is always noticeably smaller than the calendar count — roughly five days in every seven, less the holidays.
- Why does the count jump after Christmas?
Because it rolls to the next one. On 26 December the answer is 364 days to Christmas 2027, not minus one day.
On 25 December itself it says it is Christmas Day rather than showing a number, which is the answer somebody checking that morning actually wants.
Problems people actually run into
Two countdowns showing different numbers
Almost always the inclusive question. One counts today and the other does not, which puts them exactly one day apart all the way down.
Neither is wrong. The useful habit is to check what a countdown says it is doing, and most say nothing at all.
Reading weeks as a decimal
51.14 weeks is arithmetically true and useless. Nobody plans around a seventh of a week.
51 weeks and 1 day is the same figure in a form you can act on, which is why it is shown that way here.
Forgetting the time zone on the final night
Christmas arrives in Auckland roughly a full day before it reaches Hawaii. A countdown pinned to one city will be wrong for everybody else, and on 24 December that is the difference between hours and none.
This one counts to midnight where you are.
Assuming the working-day count is the same everywhere
It uses US federal holidays. A UK count would remove Boxing Day, an Australian one different dates again, and many US states add their own.
